Diffusion Tensor Imaging: A Promising New Technique for Accurate Identification of the Stria Medullaris and Habenula

چکیده
The Stria Medullaris (SM) is a white-matter tract that contains afferent fibres connect the cognitive-emotional areas in forebrain to Habenula (Hb). Hb plays an important role behavioral responses reward, stress, anxiety, pain, and sleep through its action on neuromodulator systems. Fasciculus Retroflexus (FR) forms primary output of midbrain. SM, Hb, FR are part special pathway between midbrain known as Dorsal Diencephalic Conduction system (DDC). dysfunction accompanied by different types neuropsychiatric disorders, such schizophrenia, depression, Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD). Due difficulties imaging assessment SM HB vivo , they had not been focus clinical studies until invention Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), which has revolutionized investigation Hb. DTI facilitated provided insights into their properties monoamine dysregulation. well-established technique for mapping brain microstructure white matter tracts; it provides indirect information about microstructural architecture integrity based water diffusion intra- extracellular space, Axial Diffusivity (AD), Radial (RD), mean diffusivity, Fractional Anisotropy (FA). Neurosurgeons have recognized potential value direct anatomical targeting prior Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery treatment certain conditions, TRD. only non-invasive method offers possibility visualization tracts nuclei human brain. This review study summarizes use promising new accurate identification with emphasis DBS surgery.

Identification of the stria medullaris thalami using diffusion tensor imaging☆☆☆
BACKGROUND Deep brain stimulation (DBS) via anatomical targeting of white matter tracts defined by diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) may be a useful tool in the treatment of pathologic neurophysiologic circuits implicated in certain disease states like treatment resistant depression (TRD). We sought to determine if DTI could be used to define the stria medullaris thalami (SM), the major afferent w...
متن کاملThe Benefits and implementations of Diffusion tensor imaging and Neural Fiber Tractography in Brain Surgery
Background and Aim: The methods for detecting brain activation with fMRI, MRI provides a way to measure the anatomical connections which enable lightning-fast communication among neurons that specialize in different kinds of brain functions. Diffusion tensor imaging is able to measure the direction of bundles of the axonal fibers which are all aligned. Besides mapping white matter fiber tracts,...
متن کاملEvaluation of White Matter Tracts in Autistic Individuals: A Review of Diffusion Tensor Imaging Studies
Introduction: Many cognitive and social deficits in autism are caused by abnormal functional connections between brain networks, which are manifested by impaired integrity of white matter tracts. White matter tracts are like the "highways" of the brain, which allow fast and efficient communication in different areas of the brain. The purpose of this article is to review the results of autism st...
متن کاملDiffusion Tensor Imaging for Glioma Grading: Analysis of Fiber Density Index
Introduction: The most common primary tumors of brain are gliomas and tumor grading is essential for designing proper treatment strategies. The gold standard choice to determine grade of glial tumor is biopsy which is an invasive method. The purpose of this study was to investigatethe role of fiber density index (FDi) by means of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) (as a noninvasive method) in glial...
متن کاملDiffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) - A New Imaging Technique Applyed in Multiple Sclerosis.
Some patients with ischemic stroke are subject to hemorrhagic transformation, a complication leading to increased patient morbidity and mortality. The discovery of biomarkers that can be used to identify ischemic strokes prone to this complication are very important for the clinical practice because therapy could be altered to mitigate the risk. We discuss here the results of a trial that evalu...
